EFFECTIVE, RELIABLE, SUSTAINABLE AND SERIOUSLY GREEN

The original SorbWeb™ Plus secondary oil containment system incorporates an oleophilic adsorbent layer, “SAM” is part of a developing green technology known as a permeable reactive barrier . It is an absorbent geocomposite with an exceptionally high affinity for hydrocarbons and it replaces the adsorbent layer in the SorbWeb™ Plus system giving it the extraordinary ability to manage chronic leaks, localize and isolate small accidental spills and making clean up quick and easy to save time and money .

Permeable reactive barrier SAM contains a proprietary oil immobilizer trapped between two layers of geotextile fabric designed to absorb, filter and lock in hydrocarbons. SAM will remain permeable to water even after exposure to the contaminant. These unique properties make this special geotextile the ideal solution for numerous applications including:

  • Oil containment
  • Environmental remediation
  • Secondary containment
  • In situ groundwater remediation

HOW IT WORKS

A permeable reactive barrier, or “PRB,” is a subsurface emplacement of reactive materials or a wall created below ground to clean up contaminated groundwater. The wall is “permeable,” which means that groundwater can flow through it. Water must flow through the PRB (permeable reactive barrier) to be treated. The “reactive” materials that make up the wall either trap harmful contaminants or make them less harmful. The treated groundwater flows out the other side of the wall.

SAM works by acting as a permeable reactive barrier for a hydrocarbon contaminant plume. As the plume moves (typically under a natural gradient) and flows through the SAM geotextile treated water exits the other side.

Groundwater pollution is a global problem, impacting on the quality of life of people in both developed and developing countries. Permeable reactive barrier is an emerging cost effective green alternative to traditional pump and treat systems for groundwater remediation.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS IN AN OIL CONTAINMENT SYSTEM

  • The SAM layer in the oil containment does not require sealing.
  • SAM can be deployed on the surface of the oil containment, installed as a single layer or multiple layers.
  • Full access to equipment – designed for drivability.
  • Simple to expand or repair.
  • Addresses all soil types.
  • Not intrusive to the natural drainage.
  • Opt for “Turn Key” or “Supply & Support” solutions.
  • Easily accommodates & accepts changes during construction and installation.
  • Design flexibility readily accepts complex geometry.
  • Can be installed in a Greenfield or Brownfield.
  • Installation without interruption of power.
  • As part of our commitment to full service, we stamp our IFC drawings, the final reports include stamped As Built drawings, detailed volumetric calculations of the containment, step by step documentation of the installation and an emergency preparedness guide.
  • Robust engineered solution: Our professional Engineering staff will review the project, design the solution and stamp it.
  • Horizontal permeable oil congealing and oil absorbing membranes give the system excellent free draining capabilities and exceptional performance.
  • Components of the SorbWeb™ Plus System with SAM are sourced from the best products available in the market and tested thoroughly before their incorporation.
  • Both the oilmat and the SAM geotextile are made from high quality 100% virgin black fiber with excellent chemical resistance.
  • All of our products are built with a safety factor in mind. That’s why both our oilmat and SAM fabric have the highest polymer loading in the industry with a minimum 2500 g/m2 or 73.7 oz/yd2.
  • 1 sq. yd. (1m2) of the SAM absorbent layer absorbs up to 3.5 gallons (or 15 liters) of mineral oil.
  • Each installation follows a rigorous quality control protocol with hold points at critical steps to ensure the containment is properly installed.
  • Our containments are designed to allow for vehicle access up to a max of 26,000 Kg/group of axle.
  • We design our secondary containment solutions to meet or exceed the EPA Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures (SPCC) requirements per 40 CFR 112.7, IEEE Std. 980, MOECC requirements in Canada and best practices put forward by major property insurers.
  • Meets Ministry of Environment (MOECC) requirements for projects undergoing an Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA) or Renewable Energy Approval (REA).
  • Offers excellent fire quenching capabilities.
  • Delivers optimized remediation costs and protects your reputation.
  • Free draining system typically designed to fully drain within 4 hours of a 1 in 25, or 1 in 50, year rainfall event. No standing water to deal with.
  • No pump and treat required and no mechanical moving parts.
  • Significant cost reductions achieved over its operating life. Requires no power supply or ongoing monitoring. Long virtually maintenance-free life.
  • Initial investment is 20% to 35% less than typical concrete containments.
  • Predicted life surpasses that of the equipment it serves.
  • Our product is backed with a $10 million product liability insurance and a warranty. To our knowledge no other company offers this kind of assurance.
  • Proven effective 24/7 spill and leak protection.
  • Significantly reduces environmental and economic liabilities associated with an oil spill.
  • Our proprietary polymer blends are non-toxic, non-hazardous and environmentally friendly.
  • Does not require the use of zinc pesticides to prevent biological growth.
  • Contributes to sustainability by protecting water, land and wildlife from potential oil contamination or exposure.
  • Adds to sustainability as it doesn’t require power to operate or the taxing energy consumption of pump and treat systems.
  • Environmentally responsible solution aligns well with best in class organizations that put Environmental Leadership and the centre of their core values.
  • Substation Transformers of all sizes, particularly large size equipment
  • Oil filled assets located in remote unmanned areas.
  • Environmentally sensitive areas where an oil spill could cause significant damage.
  • Single or multiple above ground storage tanks.
  • In situ groundwater remediation for hydrocarbon contaminants
  • Gas Stations
  • Pipeline Valves
  • Can be installed both in new substations or retrofitted into existing concrete containments eliminating standing water and the need for mechanical pumps.
  • SorbWeb™ Plus with SAM is extremely flexible and can be designed with a multitude of configurations, from standard earthen berm perimeters, to concrete walls, fibreglass or carbon fiber walls, jersey barriers, underground or above ground. Bring us your challenge and we will work together to develop the right solution.
